Project brightens up The Green

School pupils display creative works in historic area of Aberdeen.

The fruits of an exciting creative writing project went on display in The Green in Aberdeen today.

The See the Green exhibition showcases writing produced by pupils from Torry Walker Road and Tullos schools.

Raman Mundair, who is completing a two-year writer in residence project in the area, has been working with the pupils using the urban environment as inspiration.

Her two-year project is designed to engage local people in the historic urban environment of the Green Townscape Heritage Initiative.

She said: “As part of the project I have been working with schools from the Torry area to make the pieces of creative work which are being put on display.

“It’s absolutely fantastic that the schools have been so open to this project. The pupils have really enjoyed it. Some of them had never been to The Green before and found it an exciting and stimulating pace. I have also been working with the S3 pupils at Torry Academy and they have made some astonishing works which will hopefully go on display over the next few months.”

Councillor John Stewart, leader of Aberdeen City Council, opened the event. He added: “The Green is a hugely historic part of Aberdeen. We do want to see more people come through The Green. It’s an important area for linking the new development at Union Square with the main shopping area in Union Street. There is potential for a hugely vibrant café culture here with some niche shopping.

"We have introduced artwork to the area and we have spent money on the streetscape to improve the area’s appearance and make it feel safer. We are confident we can regenerate the area to its former glory.”
