It’s been a difficult start to the working week in Bellshill, with schools shutting early and commuters struggling to get to and from work.

North Lanarkshire Council closed schools at 2pm this afternoon (November 29), an announcement on schools is expected around 7am tomorrow (November 30).

Orbiston Day Centre closed its doors earlier today, the centre will remain shut until the weather clears.

Commuters have faced delays on the roads and public transport with buses around the town subject to delay and some rail services cancelled or suspended.

With difficult conditions on the roads, Community Safety Officer Alan Mulholland said: “It’s important that people only make essential journeys.

“If you’re not confident driving in the snow, then don’t.”

Social services

The local authority’s social services have also been hit, with two 4x4 vehicles getting to difficult spots and some staff travelling by foot in some of the worst affected areas and deployed 37 community service personnel to clear snow from around buildings.

All social work offices are currently open for business.
