Listeners in Brazil spent more than 137 hours in December tuning into broadcasts by Radio Active Scotland

A Cumbernauld radio station run by students has become a worldwide success.

Radio Active Scotland, based at Cumbernauld College, has attracted a huge following around the globe, with listeners tuning in from Brazil, Russia, Serbia, Latvia and even Taiwan.

The radio station was set up by music lecturer Darren Paramasivan three years ago, however, it only went live on the internet in 2011.

Darren said making the move to put the station on the world stage has been a great experience for the students.

He said: “As soon as we began broadcasting over the internet we acquired a diverse range of listeners from across the globe.

“Radio Active is broadcast through various radio forums which is where we pick up a lot of our international listeners, and also our presenters from around the world.”

In December, Radio Active Scotland attracted listeners from 91 countries, with Brazilian audiences topping the chart for most time spent listening, tuning in for more than 137 hours.

Radio fans in the USA were second on the listeners list, having spent almost 92 hours listening to the Cumbernauld College station’s broadcasts.

Russia recorded the most individual foreign listeners for the station, with 142 tuning in for more than 48 hours throughout December.

Darren said: “The students have worked extremely hard to make the station a success. It’s exciting for them when we get the listening figures in for the month and they can see where around the world people have been tuning in from.

“It’s great to think that news and views from Cumbernauld College are getting out to some of the most far-flung nations.”
