Successful start for El Burnzo crafts

Seafar woman's colourful crafts

Cumbernauld woman is bringing affordable treats to the town

For many people, crafts are a hobby and a way to pass the time. But for one Cumbernauld woman, it has opened the door to her owning her own business.

Seafar woman Claire Burns is the face behind El Burnzo Crafts, a website which sells jewellery, lampwork beads and other glass items.

Claire, a trainee accountant by day, may have already developed an extensive collection – including kilt pins, bracelets, earrings and pendants – but says the last year has been a learning curve, teaching herself the skills by looking at books and information on the internet.

She said: “I have always made stuff, making jewellery to go out and things. Recently I got back into it after I saw a demonstration at a Cumbernauld community forum craft fair and thought I wanted to give it a go.

“I just fell into it - I started the business last year after running out of people to give the jewellery as a gift to. I think it is a great thing and great to be able to do and you never know where it will take you.”

With pieces starting at only £1 or £2, Claire says it’s a great way to have an affordable treat, and gives her a great way to meet people.

The 23-year-old said: “Most people who do it just do it as a hobby, as something to do with their time. But I’ve found it’s a great way to meet all different people and really nice have them admiring things you have made.”
