Local authority help for dealing with problem neighbours

Problems with your Neighbours

If you’re experiencing problems with your neighbours, the best first step is to try talking to them about it. They may be unaware that what they’re doing is upsetting or irritating, and by talking it through you may be able to solve the problem swiftly.

Noisy Neighbours

Noise is one of the key issues which causes problems between neighbours and can be a particular issue in blocks of flats or areas where housing is close together.

By keeping equipment like stereos and televisions away from walls, and making sure the volume is low, particularly late at night or early in the morning, you can avoid creating a problem.

Other noisy activity, including DIY or using washing machines or vacuum cleaners, should be done during the day wherever possible.

If you are experiencing problems with noise, Aberdeenshire council suggests keeping a noise diary to record the dates, times, cause of the noise and its effect on you (eg loss of sleep). You can find an example sheet on the Aberdeenshire council website.

You can also contact the council’s Environmental Health service who can monitor the volume, time, frequency and duration of noise.
