As excitement mounts ahead of the latest Harry Potter movie release, aspiring witches and wizards are being offered the chance to brush up on their own magic skills.

Edinburgh’s first ever International Magic Festival kicked off on Wednesday by opening a unique, real-life wizarding school.

A range of magic techniques, illusions and hypnotism will be on show throughout the five day event, as well as a ‘War of the Wizards’, where the country’s best amateur magicians will compete for honour, glory and a cash prize.

Kevin McMahon, Festival director says “The first ever MagicFest has brought together a fantastic mix of performers that really capture the spirit of magic as a unique art form.  The rise of David Blaine, Derren Brown and Harry Potter has seen a new generation of magicians and magic-lovers.  We believe that the city that inspired JK Rowling's world-renowned books should play host to a world-renowned magic festival.”

A number of respected acts less well known outside the magic circle are also expected to put on their debut public performances during the festival, including Ringo Starr’s favourite conjurer Ben Woodward and the man entrusted to entertain Derren Brown’s dad at his 70th Birthday, Jon Archer.

The programme will take place across four venues in the old town, with each focussing on a particular genre with the best in Mind Reading, Close Up, Comedy Magic and Classic Variety Magic.

Outgoing President of the Edinburgh Magic Circle, Tom Brass, said: “This project will certainly benefit the people of Edinburgh and will attract many magicians from all over the UK and beyond. I have had a look at the programme and am really excited about many of the acts coming up to Edinburgh”.

A Visit Scotland spokeswoman added: "Everyone is fascinated by magic, regardless of age, and the programme should be a great draw for visitors and also people in Scotland with some fantastic performances and competitions.”
