A pupil from a second Edinburgh primary school has been confirmed as suffering from the winter vomiting bug.

Education chiefs confirmed a pupil from Dalry Primary School had been stricken by norovirus and five other children and a teacher have also been sent home as a precaution.

Headteacher Sally Barker: “We are getting to the end of term, everyone is tired and the central heating is on.

“We sent a letter home as a precaution after the first child was confirmed to have norovirus. Another school near by has been hit quite hard by it.

“The letter recommends handwashing and other hygiene precautions. Since it was sent home we have not had any other cases.”

Classes at the school are continuing as normal. This comes as a nearby primary school was shut due to an outbreak of a winter vomiting bug.

Hundreds of pupils at Balgreen Primary were sent home last week after reports of vomiting. Specialist cleaners were called in to decontaminate the building over the weekend.

Norovirus can affect both children and adults. It is highly infectious, and outbreaks are common in busy places such as schools and hospitals.

Experts recommend increasing the frequency of handwashing to stop from spreading or catching the bug.
