Armed robbers held up a wine shop and made off with a three-figure sum of money in Edinburgh.

The men entered Meadows Wine on Melville Terrace on Thursday night and pointed what appeared to be handguns at staff. They demanded cash from the till and were handed the money during the incident just after 8pm.

After getting the cash, the men ran out of the shop and along Melville Terrace towards Moncrieff Terrace.

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses to the “traumatic” event.

Both suspects are described as being white, in their late teens to early 20s, between 5ft 8ins and 6ft and of slim build.

One was wearing a black hooded top with a black scarf hiding his face and dark-coloured Adidas tracksuit bottoms. He spoke with a local accent.

The other was wearing a black hooded top, blue scarf over his face and dark-coloured Adidas tracksuit bottoms. He had short fair hair.

A police spokesperson said: "Fortunately no one was injured in this incident, but it has been a traumatic experience for the members of staff in the store.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, and may have seen two men acting suspiciously, to get in touch.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may recognise the description of the suspects to come forward.”
