Coping with Christmas waste

Waste Recycling: Moray seeking public support

So, you’ve had a marvellous Christmas. The presents have all been opened. Vast quantities have food have been consumed. The question is, what do you do with all the stuff you don’t need?

Your first inclination may simply be to bin it. But hang on, are there other alternatives?

If you suddenly find that you have unwanted, but perfectly serviceable possessions, have you thought about offering them to someone else for free on service like Freegle?

There is an active Edinburgh Freegle group where you can post unwanted, but functional things. You can find them on Facebook here.

Of course, Edinburgh also has a huge range of charity shops that will accept useful goods too. Local Charity Changeworks has produced a handy map of all the charity shops in Edinburgh that gives details of the types of donations each shop accepts.

The map also has lots of advice on other ways that you can make sure your unwanted items are repaired or reused instead of binned. You can find the map here.

For many people, Christmas means food. And when Christmas is over, we can having to deal with even more waste food than usual.

The Love Food Hate Waste website has an excellent guide that can help you work out what to cook from the leftovers.

Whilst this is no immediate solution, one way to deal with Waste Food is to set-up a wormery. Whilst this may not appeal to the squeamish, you can find a DIY guide to building your own wormery on the Greener Leith website here.

And after all that, if you do still have rubbish to deal with, you might be interested in working out what’s going on with refuse and rubbish collections over the festive period. You can find out all the details on the council website here.
