Figures that show RAF Leuchars has been closed for only seven days on account of weather conditions since 2008 adds to the case for retaining the Fife airbase, according to local MP Sir Menzies Campbell.
Since 2008 the Fife airbase has lost just seven flying days due solely to weather conditions.
Other UK air bases for which figures were available lost on average 25 flying days due to all factors. RAF Lossiemouth in Moray - also under threat - lost 21 flying days due to weather.
Sir Menzies Campbell was given the figures by the Ministry of Defence in reply to a parliamentary question.
Sir Menzies said: "These figures underline the compelling case for retaining an RAF base in north-east Fife. The base is perfectly suited for the role which it has executed to such exemplary standards for over 40 years.
"Geographically, RAF Leuchars is in the ideal position. People living in Fife may be surprised to learn this but rainfall is on a par with the south-east of England meaning visibility is very good for flying operations, and winters usually pass without significant snowfall.
"Added to this, RAF Leuchars' location means its aircraft can be overhead Edinburgh or Glasgow within a matter of minutes and also able to reach easily the population centres of northern England.
"RAF Leuchars is in the right place, at the right time and doing the right job."
An MoD spokesman said: "Ministers are currently awaiting the recommendations of the extensive study into the future basing requirements of our armed forces. As yet no decisions have been made."
