The first full week since the Christmas break is finally over and it’s time for a rest. But, as ever, Edinburgh is buzzing with things to do, find out and take part in.

For those interested in the future of development in the capital, there will be the opportunity to quiz council staff in St James Centre today. The last in a series of exhibitions, the event is part of a consultation on the City of Edinburgh Council’s Local Development Plan. The council are seeking views and options for change in the ten year strategy, beginning in 2015, which aims to modernise the planning system in a number of key areas, including economic growth and shopping and leisure. From 11am to 3pm in St James Centre.

Today is your final chance to catch Scottish Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty as it completes a stint at the Festival Theatre. The performance, which has been touring Scotland, features Tchaikovsky’s score along with choreography by Scottish Ballet’s artistic director Ashley Page and a lavish set and costumes from international designer Antony McDonald. From 2pm and 7.30pm at the Festival Theatre.

Drop into the Royal Botanic Gardens’ Edible Garden today for hints and tips on how to create your own patch. Making Plans involves the team behind the Edible Gardening Project, a People’s Postcode Trust-funded initiative aiming to help people grow their own vegetables and fruit, who will be on hand with advice on preparing for next season’s crop. At the Real Life Science Studio, John Hope Gateway on Saturday and Sunday between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

This weekend will see the first ‘Scallywag Sale’ held at Holy Cross Church Hall, Davidsons Mains. Aimed specifically at parents of young children, the sale invites people to recycle maternity, baby and children’s items for use by new families. The free event takes place from 10am to 12pm at Holy Cross Church Hall, Quality Street in Davidsons Mains.

But before heading out be aware that Shandwick Place closes today to make way for tram works. The street will close to all vehicles with diversions on either Melville Street for east bound traffic or the West Approach Road for west bound traffic. Visit Lothian Buses’ website for updates on bus services.
