A local writer is to launch their first ever published book at The Shore in Leith.
Emily Dodd, who lives in Newhaven, had her first ever poem published at the age of 10, and now currently splits her time between a part-time job with local social enterprise, Changeworks, and developing her career as a writer and podcaster.
Her book, called “Banana Me Beautiful,” features poems, drawings and photographs produced when she was a child, a teenager and an adult. In the video clip above, she performs one of her poems, called: "little oak tree."
The Facebook page she set up just a few weeks ago to provide a sneak-peak into the book, has already gained more than a hundred supporters on-line.
Now, to formally launch her book Emily has gained the support of local friends and supporters to help stage the book launch event which is set to take place on the Leith Agency barge, moored on The Shore.
Speaking in advance of the event, she said: “I’m excited to be launching on a boat and to have such brilliant people joining me to read. I’ve been overwhelmed by the support I’ve received for the book.”
Award wining beat poet, Young Dawkins the 3rd, will perform one of Emily’s poems at the launch event. He said: "I am thrilled to read one of Emily's poems on this special night. She is an emerging Scottish voice who writes with wit, passion and insight. She is one to watch."
Ed Brooke, Head of Leith Agency says: “We're delighted to support Emily and have her launch on our barge. She's one of Leith's many creative gems and we're committed to supporting and helping creativity in the area whether it's through Leith Records or through support such as this.”
As well as poetry, and a question and answer session, the event will also feature live music and banana themed food.
There are still a small number of free tickets available for this event. You can book yours on-line here.
The launch event takes place on Monday, July 11, from 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
