School children are being shown a film outlining the impact of becoming embroiled in a life of crime.

The DVD depicts a youngster's descent into drug addiction and the knock-on effects for the local community.

All secondary pupils, apart from first years, in the Lothian and Borders Police area are being shown the film, entitled Slide.

Chief Superintendent Malcolm Graham said the DVD is an important reminder that the consequences of a life of crime will far outweigh any perceived benefits.

He said: "Organised crime group leaders like to avoid police attention by coercing others into doing their dirty work for them.

"Many young people may be seduced by the notion that crime brings with it perks such as designer clothes, fast cars and big houses, but this DVD quickly dispels that myth."

The DVD was launched at Castlebrae Community High School in Edinburgh.

City council education leader Marilyne MacLaren said: "There is nothing glamorous about a life of crime and I am sure this hard-hitting DVD will drive home to our young people the message that it will bring nothing but misery to both themselves and their families.
