A poetry event marking World Community Arts Day is set to take place in Craigmillar.

Global Conditioning will bring amateur and experienced writers from the village together with those from the city centre to perform their own and listen to each others’ work.

Establisehd by Craigmillar Writers Group and Inky Fingers, who used to perform poetry in the Forest Café, the evening will celebrate local creativity and is open to all members of the public.

Amongst the talent attending will be Donald Smith, director of the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and Andrew Crummy, founder of World Community Arts Day. The artist is also son of the late Helen Crummy, an author and key figure in the area who was instrumental to the formation of Craigmillar Festival Society.

There will also be performances from Craigmillar Writers Group and Inky Fingers members as well as guests from Tyne and Esk Writers and the director of StAnza poetry festival.

During the night there will be musical interludes from Craigmillar Archives Trustee, Rachael Bell, during which time writers will have the opportunity to network.

Johnni Stanton, from Craigmillar Writers Group, said: “The event is growing out of all proportion - I’m expecting more than 100 people. I’m hoping to make it an annual thing after this year - I want to put Craigmillar back on the forefront.

“Global Conditioning is the only poetry event we’ll see this year in this part of Scotland and we’ve got people coming from all over the country. It’s going to be a laugh but will also eb in memory of Helen Crummy in the way she taught us.”

The event is free and takes place on Friday, February 10 from 7.30pm in SPACE gallery, Niddrie Mains Terrace.
