It has been announced that the Leith Walk pigeons will to come back to roost alongside the London Road clock – in a new location.

The clock will not be returned to its original location at the top of Leith Walk but will stand at the south end of Elm Row so that it won’t be moved again during subsequent tram works.

As part of reinstatement works following tram line construction on Leith Walk, a number of monuments and pieces of street art will be returned to public display – including a statue of Sherlock Holmes and sculptures of plump pigeons.

The City of Edinburgh Council stored the various items while the construction has been on going but confirmed that they will be reinstated in the area.

The planning document released from the council read: “The London Road clock and Leith Walk pigeons will be relocated in the next phase of works to a new site at the south end of Elm Row, such that they will not need to be moved again when Line 1a is extended north of York Place.”

The popular birds will return to the same street as the Joseph Pearce pub. Anna Kristopherson, owner of the bar said: “It will be good for them to be seen by more people and I am sure that our customers will appreciate them.

“Our knitting group can make little hats for them and our jogging club will inspect them when they arrive.”

The statue of Sherlock Holmes will return to its original location on Picardy Place but this will have to be moved again when the tram works extend to York Place and a new permanent site will have to be found.

The spheres that were situated on Elm Row will not be put back as they have been deemed to be in too poor condition but alternative suggestions are welcome.
