A man has been hit across the face with a bottle in an "unprovoked" attack.

The 35-year-old was walking up South Street in Armadale, West Lothian with a group of friends just after midnight on Thursday when another man approached him.

The man hit him across the face with a bottle and cut his cheek before walking off down Station Road with a woman.

The victim called an ambulance and was taken St John’s Hospital in Livingston where he is still being treated.

A 28-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Livingston Sheriff Court at a later date.

Lothian and Borders Police are still trying to track down the man involved and are appealing for witnesses.

He was around 6ft tall, of heavy build and was wearing a red hooded top.

A police spokesperson said: "This was an entirely unprovoked attack which has resulted in a man suffering a serious injury, which may leave a permanent scar.

"We would appeal for anyone with any information to contact us immediately, likewise we would be keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the description of the suspect."

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
