A woman was hit over the head with a weapon in an "unprovoked" attack as she answered her door in East Lothian.
The attacker struck as the woman opened the door to her Musselburgh home, hitting her on the head and arms with an unknown object.
The man ran off when the victim managed to shut the door. She was not seriously injured but was left badly shaken by the attack at around 7.50pm on Sunday, January 7.
Police are now appealing for anyone who may have information about the attack on Pinkiehill Crescent to come forward.
A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This appears to be a completely random and unprovoked assault, which left the woman badly shaken, though, thankfully, not seriously injured.
"We would urge anyone who was in or around Pinkiehill Crescent on Sunday evening and saw any suspicious activity in the area to contact police immediately.
"Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect and can help officers identify him is also asked to get in touch."
The attacker is described as being white and in his early 20s, around 5ft 5in tall and of a slim build, with an ashen face and short, dark cropped hair. He was waering a grey top and dark trousers.
Anyone with information can phone Lothian and Border Police on 0131 3113131 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
