A 99-year-old woman was rescued from her home by firefighters after the fuse board in the property caught alight.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service were called to the retirement flat in the four-storey sheltered housing complex at 4.40am on Wednesday in Edinburgh.

The fire service was called to Homeross House, Mount Grange on Strathearn Road after a smoke alarm sounded.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The fire started in the fuse board of the property. There was one 99-year-old female suffering from smoke inhalation oxygen was administered at the scene.

"Fortunately the blaze was detected quickly by a working smoke alarm and extinguished by fire crews. The elderly householder was treated with oxygen for smoke inhalation but did not need to go to hospital.

"When crews arrived they discovered the flat was filling with smoke.

"Fire can break out at any time. A working smoke detector is the best protection against fire giving you early warning to escape from toxic smoke and raise the alarm."

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that the woman was given further oxygen on their arrival and was checked over but she did not require hospital treatment.
