A student is to stand trial for running over and killing a Scots skiing champion who was cycling in America.
Craig Macfie, 24, was cycling home at 2.30am on November 18 in Eugene, Oregon when he was struck by a 4x4, allegedly driven by a drunk driver.
Mr Macfie, from Morningside in Edinburgh, was taken to hospital and his family flew over to be at his bedside but the 24-year-old never regained consciousness and died on Saturday.
Patrick Compton, 21, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter after allegedly driving while drunk.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared at Lane County Circuit Court and will stand trial. His lawyer said he needed more time to look at the evidence.
He will stand trial in June and will remain on bail until then.
Mr Macfie skied for the Scottish and British Alpine Teams as well as the British Universities.
A statement from Snowsport Scotland paid tribute to Craig at the time of his death.
It read: "One video clip sums Craig up – a spectacular crash at the World Universities Championships in Ezurum, Turkey earlier in 2011. The video captures him crashing, being thrown off the piste by the impact, breaking through a safety fence bouncing and sliding down a 100 metre slope, after which he stands up, face covered with blood, smiling and giving the thumbs up. He went on to compete in the slalom the next day.
"Craig accomplished much in his all too short life. He will be forever remembered as a wonderful son and brother and a loyal friend, He made much of his talents, had such a positive attitude to life and always had a cheeky smile on his face. He lived life to the full.
"He was too young to die."
