As teams and athletes around the city swing into action for the new year, STV Local takes a look at the sporting events happening in the city this weekend.

Minus Ryan McGowan (suspended) and Danny Grainger (injured), Hearts take on Scottish Premier League rivals St Mirren at Tynecastle this Saturday. Hoping to maintain their current form – with four wins and a draw in their last five matches – the Edinburgh side might have to work to beat the Paisley team, who have only lost one game out of their most recent six matches.

Boroughmuir’s Rugby Club’s Saturday clash will see the return of former Edinburgh centre Malcolm Clapperton as captain, in a bid for triumph over Currie, who recently returned from competing in the British and Irish Cup. Restarting the Premiership in eighth place, with Currie in fourth, Boroughmuir have enlisted past and present Edinburgh players including Ally Warnock, Sep Visser and Harry Leonard to help meet their target of top three. Saturday at Malleny Park.

In athletics, the third and final leg of the Scottish East District Cross Country League will take place in Broxburn on Saturday. Edinburgh Athletic Club will defend their overall league trophy at the event, which will involve races in different age groups between East District clubs.

Edinburgh Capitals ice hockey team will travel to Hull to make what they hope won’t be a repeat performance against the Hull Stingrays, who beat them 5-1 in their last match in December.

And Edinburgh Hockey Club’s CALA Men 4s will take on Livingstone for the first time in two weeks at Inveralmond High School.
