A historic Leith organisation was resurrected on Tuesday, January 24, 14 years after it was mothballed. The first 21st Century meeting of Leith Civic Trust took place in the South Leith Parish Church Halls has been documented by co-opted board member, Alex Wilson.
At a well attended meeting in Leith, a long dormant Leith institution, was re-activated. The extant Leith Civic Trust was first established in 1962. Dedicated to the protection of the built history of Leith and the protection of these assets it was also established to promote the history of the former town.
The recent announcement by Councillor Munn of the imminent return of the Flag of the Port of Leith after a two year campaign, heralds the dawning of a new visual age in Leith and an outward transformation of the Port for the greater good of resident and visitor alike.
With the return forecast in the coming months, much work requires to be done to ensure all business and organisations in Leith are fully prepared for this historic event.
With the Trust having effectively gone to sleep in the late 90's, for a variety of reasons, the advent of the return of the Flag spurred the existing members of the Trust to bring it back to life.
With the Trust showing its hand, there are now a plethora of organisations and Trusts operating in Leith many with similar objectives in mind. It is likely that with the re-emergence of the Civic Trust that there will be a desire for rationalisation in the near future.
It is anticipated that such discussions will commence, shortly. Nevertheless, a new level of excitement in Leith's potential is now underway, notwithstanding the excellent progress already achieved by other organisations.
Surely by Easter we will all enjoy the pleasure of seeing Leith's ancient emblem at last flying again after its 90 year absence. That alone should be celebrated, the other things such as the bi-centennial of the Customs House this year, now comes into focus.
We should watch forthcoming changes in Leith with great interest.
