Five-a-day: Rugby, Reflection and learning to play the Clàrsach

Peaches: One of the pieces on show for one last day at the City Art Centre

Sunday is said to be the day of rest. But if you don’t believe that old adage, why not take some tips from our 5-a-day?

Offering an alternative to the hustle and bustle of Princes Street, Stockbridge Market will take place from 10am to 5pm today, with local producers selling everything from fish to jam and baked goods. The regular event, which is stationed on Saunders Street, also features stalls purveying clothes and gifts. Find out more on their website.

Today is the last day to catch Reflection, the latest exhibition at the City Art Centre. The display, which highlights the work of 22 artists and makers to have been supported by the Visual Arts Awards and Craft Maker Awards run by the City of Edinburgh Council in partnership with Creative Scotland, features a variety of disciplines and mediums, including painting, glassmaking and film. Full details on the Edinburgh Museums and Galleries website.

For a less sophisticated form of entertainment, try throwing on the glad rags and heading down to The Singing Kettle: Fancy Dress Party at the Festival Theatre. Probably best suited to the little ones, the afternoon event will see Cilla, Artie, Gary and Kevin rummaging through their toy box and dressing up for a sing-along. Showing at both 12pm and 3pm, tickets cost £13 for adults. Visit the Festival Theatre to purchase tickets.

Rugby fans may well remain huddled around a TV for the most part of the afternoon, to see Scotland take on Wales as part of the RBS Six Nations championship. While Wales are still revelling in the glory of beating Ireland last week, Scotland fear for the worst, following three defeats and no try in four games. The match will be shown on Sky 1 – full details on the RBS Six Nations website.

And to top off a truly patriotic afternoon, pioneer performer and scholar Ann Heymann will hold a Clàrsach workshop at the Columcille Centre in Morningside. Working with a Wirestrung harp, Heymann will introduce the intrinsically Celtic instrument to beginners and teach new tips to more experienced players. The workshop costs £10 and will take place from 1pm to 5pm. Anyone interested should phone 0131 446 0723 or email talitha@sonasmultimedia.com.
