A community event is being held today to give locals the opportunity to map out the future of the development of the canalside area of Fountainbridge.

The day, dubbed ‘Brewing New Life’, has been organised by the Fountainbridge Canalside Initiative, a group of residents who are trying to ensure the community has an input into the rejuvenation of the area.

The event will provide the chance to see plans for what has already been proposed for the area, discussion of the potential for community-led initiatives and a guide walk of the area.

FCI member and local resident Stan Reeves said: “This part of Edinburgh has a fantastic history of industry and community and we want to make sure that local people get the chance to have their say on its future.

“This isn’t just about the look and feel of the canalside area, but also about what the needs of the area are in terms of jobs and affordable housing.

“We’re hoping that if we can come up with a strong community vision at this stage then we can work with developers and others to get the best possible outcome for those who live and love the canalside.

“Most of the site has recently been acquired by Edinburgh Council from Lloyds Bank and the Council has a clear responsibility to develop it in line with the recently-published Edinburgh Canal Strategy.”

'Brewing New Life' is being held on Saturday February 18 in the Tollcross Community Centre. It runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm.
