STV News understands the dead body, found in a Nicolson Street flat, belongs to an Asian woman.
A dead body has been found in a flat in Edinburgh.
The discovery was made just after 1.15pm on Tuesday in a property in Nicolson Street, which is in the south side of the city centre.
Lothian and Borders Police have a forensic team currently at the scene. Detectives are interviewing neighbours as the investigation continues.
Police have also closed off a tenement block in the street in their search for clues.
A spokesperson from the force said: "Enquiries are at a very early stage and a full forensic investigation will now be carried out, to determine cause of death, which is being treated as unexplained at this time."
Police are also trying to trace the next of kin of the dead woman.
Sources say the body is that of an Asian woman who is believed to have lived in the building with her children. It is thought the woman was found dead in a bath.
Nicolson Street is in the heart of the capital’s city centre and is a popular area for students, due to its proximity to the University of Edinburgh.
