Scots businessman and philanthropist awarded honorary degree by Edinburgh University.
Scots businessman and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter was today given an honorary degree from Edinburgh University.
The multi-millionaire entrepreneur, who is originally from Ayrshire, made his fortune after setting up and selling his first business, Sports Division, for £290million in 1998 when he was 37.
He had built the business from scratch - starting by selling trainers out of the back of a van - over a 14-year period to become Europe's premier privately held sports retailer.
He went on to establish the Hunter Foundation, which invests in educational and business ventures across the world.
He said: "To get something from Edinburgh is quite special because Edinburgh is ranked among the world's best universities so that's a world class university.
"And when you see the divergence of nations the students come from it really puts in your mind the thought of the importance of Scottish education and how it puts Scotland on the world map. So yeah, I am chuffed to bits!"
