Basketball Festival for 80 Elgin primary school pupils

Basketball Festival: Over 80 Elgin primary pupils take part this week.

Elgin Eagles basketball club have provided coaching for 240 primary school children in Elgin.

The fourth annual Elgin Primary Schools basketball festival is to take place this week.

The event has been organised through a development group involving Active Schools, Elgin Eagles basketball club, Basketball Scotland and Moray Council Sports Development, and will take place on Friday, December 2 at the Elgin Community Centre.

Last year the Elgin Eagles Club submitted a successful ‘Awards for All’ funding bid which has covered the costs for coaching sessions this term.

All eight Elgin primary schools have been involved in the 5-week coaching block in preparation for the festival.

Active Schools co-ordinator, Roy McPherson said, “We are delighted to have organised this festival for the fourth year.

“Coaches from the Elgin Eagles club have delivered coaching to approximately 240 Primary six pupils in the area. The response has been excellent and as a result of these sessions the Eagles Junior section has experienced a rise in members.

“The festival will be a great way to bring the curtain down on the school sessions, and will encourage even more kids to continue playing the sport.”

Eighty pupils from the Elgin Primary Schools will take part on the day, when teams will be made up of ten primary six pupils, five boys and five girls, and will compete in fun basketball games.

Graham Stewart from the Elgin Eagles, said: "The development of basketball in Moray has never been in a stronger position. The standard of both coaches and players continues to improve and a special mention must go to both the coaches and teachers who have continued to support the development of school basketball."
