Michael Martin awarded peerage

Former Commons Speaker Michael Martin has been made a baron of the United Kingdom.

Mr Martin's peerage was confirmed on Friday, although it had been long expected.

His new title will be: Baron Martin of Springburn, of Port Dundas in the City of Glasgow.

The notice in the London Gazette reads: "The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 25 August 2009, to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon the Right Honourable Michael John Martin, by the name, style and title of BARON MARTIN OF SPRINGBURN, of Port Dundas in the City of Glasgow."

Mr Martin resigned in the wake of the expenses scandal that rocked the House of Commons when a newspaper revealed questionable claims made by MPs.

His handling of the ensuing crisis was heavily criticised, in particular over the issue of how MPs' expenses forms were leaked to the media.

When Labour MP Kate Hoey questioned the wisdom of calling in the police to investigate the originator of the leaked information, Mr Martin's caustic response was deemed inappropriate.

He dismissed the MP, saying: "I listen to you often when I turn on my television at midnight, and I hear your public utterances and your pearls of wisdom on Sky News."

Following his resignation, Mr Martin was replaced as Speaker by Conservative MP John Bercow after the first open elections for the Speakership.

Mr Martin will now sit in the House of Lords while a by-election has still to be held in his Glasgow North East constituency.
