A series of events will be held on Friday to mark the 50th anniversary of the Auchengeich Pit disaster.
Children at Glenmanor Primary School in Moodiesburn, North Lanarkshire, will be opening a memorial garden while Black Gold – a project created to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy – have organised a series of talks and events.
Meanwhile, Bill Adair and the Bridgend Sessions Band will provide music for another commemoration at the Scottish Mining Museum in Newtongrange, Midlothian.
On September 18, 1959, the early morning shift went down the Auchengeich Pit as usual. At approximately 7am, a fire caused by an electrical fault trapped the miners underground.
Smoke from the fire overcame the men and later on in the day, the decision was reached to flood the pit. Only one man survived the ordeal.
The event devastated the North Lanarkshire community.
Acts of remembrance to mark the disaster will come to an end on Sunday with a special memorial service.
