The two sides of Allan McGregor

Allan McGregor has two sides to his life - a fantastic talent on the football field, and a troubled figure off it.

The 28-year-old has been at Rangers his entire professional career and after years on the fringes of the team, he finally established himself as the number one at Ibrox in the 2006/07 season. While Rangers fans across the globe have applauded his performances throughout the years, many would have no doubt groaned at his off-field troubles.

Sadly, one of the most notable incidents in his career was his role in the so-called ‘Boozegate’ scandal which shamed Scottish football.

McGregor and his then Rangers team-mate Barry Ferguson were dropped from the national side in 2009 for a late night drinking session while on Scotland duty. The duo were then pictured showing an apparent V-sign to the Tartan Army as they sat on the bench for the next game.

They were slammed by Scotland fans and by Rangers manager Walter Smith, who dropped the pair from Rangers as the team went on to claim a cup and league double. Ferguson was sold at the end of the season, but McGregor stayed.

IN DEPTH

The goalkeeper regained his place in the team and has been part of a Rangers side which look set to win the league and the possibility of completing a domestic treble at the expense of bitter rivals Celtic. The 2009-10 season should have been one to remember for McGregor. Instead, he will once again be remembered for front-page speculation instead of back page celebration.

For the past few months, the player has been at the centre an alleged sex assault scandal - one that he was vehemently denied he was any part of, and one described by the goalkeeper as a "vile lie".

Then, just as it looked like McGregor would be called back into the Scotland family by new manager Craig Levein, he was involved in an apparent assault in Glasgow city centre -a story which is developing by the day.

Ten years from now, when looking back on McGregor’s career, it would be a shame if all we remembered was the tabloid newspaper headlines and not his ability between the sticks. But right now, that looks likely.
