Krankies return to Glasgow pantomime stage

The Kranies: Glasgow pantomime return.

The Krankies are to return to Christmas pantomime in Glasgow for the first time since one of the husband and wife double act was almost killed in an on-stage accident.

Actress Janette Tough, who plays cheeky schoolboy Wee Jimmy,  fell from a giant mechanical beanstalk during a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Pavilion Theatre in 2004.

It then collapsed on top of the actress, crushing her. She was treated for a fractured skull and broken collar bone but made a full recovery.

Mrs Tough, 62, is now to appear alongside her Krankies co-star and husband Ian Tough in a new production of Aladdin in December.

The comedy duo will star alongside Doctor Who and Torchwood actor John Barrowman in the Clyde Auditorium show. They will play a pair of Chinese policemen while Barrowman takes the title role.

John Barrowman, best known for his acting, has also appeared as a judge on TV musical talent shows including Any Dream Will Do and I'd Do Anything, has released several albums and is an accomplished theatrical performer. he has also appeared in several pantomime productions, but this is the first time he has performed in one in Scotland.

The Glasgow-born star, whose family emigrated to America when he was nine, is expected to appear in the next season of the hit US TV show Desperate Housewives.

Promoters say it will be the first time the Krankies have appeared in a Glasgow pantomime since the accident.

Michael Harrison, managing director of Qdos Entertainment's pantomime division and executive producer of Aladdin, said: "The Krankies are synonymous with the great tradition of pantomime in Glasgow and we are thrilled that they will be appearing at the SECC.

"We have been working with Ian and Janette over the past few seasons and they are widely regarded as being masters of the genre.

"Their huge talent, combined with John Barrowman's energy and showmanship together with our spectacular visual effects, is set to make Aladdin an unmissable pantomime experience."

Mr and Mrs Tough are now semi-retired but throughout the 1980s were a fixture on TV screens throughout the UK.

They made their name on Crackerjack with their routine, which saw Janette act the part of mischievous Scottish schoolboy Wee Jimmy, and went on to host The Krankies Club on ITV.

Since then they have continued to appear in theatre and pantomine, and have made numerous TV appearances including the Paul O'Grady Show and Loose Women, as well as fronting an advertising campaign for STV Bingo.

Aladdin runs at the SECC's Clyde Auditorium from Saturday December 11 2010 to Sunday January 9 2011.
