Toxic algae has been found in a reservoir popular with walkers and used by model boat enthusiasts.
Inverclyde Council health bosses have warned people not to touch the algae, at Murdieston dam and the nearby reservoir in Greenock.
A spokesman warned that the substance has caused the deaths of livestock and dogs, and can also have serious health effects on humans.
The spokesman added: "Effects on people coming into contact with toxic scums include skin rashes, eye irritations, vomiting and diarrhoea, fever and pains in muscles and joints.
The situation is now being monitored and treated.
"The actions currently taken are precautionary," the spokesman added.
Notices have been posted next to the reservoirs warning against contact with the algae. Greenock Model Yacht and Powerboat Club, which uses the reservoir, has also been contacted.
SEPA and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde have also been informed.
