A thug who stabbed a teenager to death with a pair of scissors in a row over the victim's girlfriend has been jailed for four years and eight months.
Daniel Bonner attacked Liam Morrison in April last year after Mr Morrison accused Bonner's brother of kissing his partner Zoe Brown. The High Court in Glasgow heard that the 23-year-old stabbed his 18-year-old friend in the neck.
Sentencing Bonner on Wednesday, Judge Lady Stacey told him: "You have taken the life of a young man who was your friend and you now have to live with that. You stabbed Liam Morrison in the neck and only a period imprisonment can reflect that."
Lady Stacey added that Bonner will be supervised for three years after his release from prison. At an earlier hearing, Bonner admitted to charges of culpable homicide and assault.
The court heard how Mr Morrison had been with friends at a grassy area in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, on April 22. Bonner and his brother Patrick later joined them and Mr Morrison, of Springwells, Blantyre, then phoned his girlfriend Zoe Brown.
Around 10pm, Patrick Bonner got into a row with another male and Ms Brown went to calm him down. The court heard that Mr Morrison shouted at his girlfriend: "Is that you kissing Pat?"
Ms Brown denied this, but Patrick Bonner told his brother about the accusation. Daniel Bonner then kicked Mr Morrison off a bollard that he was sitting on and then punched him.
David Young, prosecuting, said: "When asked why he had hit the deceased, he replied that (Morrison) had insulted Zoe Brown and threatened his brother."
Fight
Mr Morrison stormed off but soon returned to the scene. He spoke to Bonner before the pair started fighting. It soon became apparent that the victim was hiding something up his sleeve.
He pulled out a pair of scissors and started attacking Daniel Bonner with them. There was a struggle and Mr Morrison fell to the ground. Bonner grabbed the scissors and stabbed Mr Morrison twice in the buttocks.
Bonner then lunged at the teenager and struck him in the neck. Mr Morrison pulled the scissors out and yelled that he had been stabbed. He sank to the ground as Bonner pleaded with him to get up. Bonner cried: "Liam, don't die on me."
Bonner used some of his clothes to try and stem the heavy bleeding. Paramedics soon arrived but, despite attempts to revive Mr Morrison, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Defence advocate Brian McConnachie QC told the court that Mr Morrison would still be alive if he hadn't turned up with the scissors. Mr McConnachie added: "Mr Bonner's remorse has been significant and appears genuine.
"He will have to live the rest of his life with the knowledge that he killed someone and that's made even worse by the fact that these boys were friends."
