Heavy rain has caused floods in Ayrshire and parts of Glasgow.

Kilbirnie, Glengarnock, Fairlie and Largs were all flooded in parts on Wednesday night, while Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said they were "extremely busy" with calls about the heavy rainfall.

The fire service received 117 calls regarding flash flooding between 5.45pm and 11pm on Wednesday. Initially, calls were received from parts of Argyll and Bute including Rothesay and Helensburgh.

A few hours later, firemen reported problems affecting properties, roads and the rail network in Largs and Kilbirnie in particular, while the River Garnock breached its banks in Kilbirnie at around 8.45pm.

A spokesperson from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue also reported the collapse of a wall onto the Glasgow to Largs railway line, near Pencil View. The line was consequently closed by Network Rail.

At the height of operations last night, 65 firefighters from Argyll and Bute, North Ayrshire, Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire were called to deal with the flooding.

On Thursday morning, roads in Greenock and Ayrshire were closed for a time while drivers in Great Western Road in Glasgow reported delays of up to an hour, with the water coming above the wheels of cars in some parts.

Meanwhile, poor driving conditions were also reported on the M8 around Glasgow, and the M80 just north of the city.

The Met Office issued a weather advisory saying there will be heavy rain across the UK on Thursday, including the west of Scotland.
