Hundreds of homes in Troon suffered a power cut on Tuesday night.
STV viewers in town, which has a population of just under 15,000, reported lights flickering at around 7.20pm before a loss of power.
A spokeswoman for Scottish Power said: "Two to three hundred customers are off-supply after a fault at Troon's main sub-station."
Engineers were said to be investigating the problem and the company hoped to have power fully restored as quickly as possible but "it was too early to say when the supply will go back on".
Some residents claimed to have heard an explosion immediately before the power cut, which the spokeswoman explained may have been industrial fuses blowing at the substation.
The company apologised for any inconvenience caused by the loss of supply.
