Students march through Glasgow in mass protest

By Lesley Kinney

Hundreds of students have marched through Glasgow city centre in protest against education cuts.

Students from various universities in Scotland congregated in George Square to take part in another round of demonstrations. They had been arriving at the premises of companies allegedly avoiding paying tax to the Treasury.

Similar protests have been taking place elsewhere around the UK, including London, Swansea and Newcastle.

The protests were ahead of the parliamentary vote on tuition fees on Thursday night - a vote which saw the Coalition's plans to raise tuition fees to a maximum of £9000 approved despite abstention and rebellion by some LibDem MPs.

At one point students tried to occupy both the Vodafone store on Buchanan Street and a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Other targets included the Army Recruitment Office on Queen St and a Bank of Scotland branch.

One blogger at the protest described the mood of the demo as "militant" and "noisy" and described "hundreds strong flying pickets running around the city centre".

They added: "They’re not in anywhere yet – but occupation remains the order of the day!"

The protest ended outside the City Chambers before many of the students headed to Edinburgh to take part in a candellit vigil outside the Scottish Parliament.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "There have been no arrests but we understand the students plan to travel through to Edinburgh after Glasgow."
