A woman watched from her window as her partner was beaten to death only yards from their home.
William McKeeney, 57, was killed by two men in Melville Street, Pollokshields, Glasgow, in the "unprovoked and violent" attack.
Two men are being sought in connection with the murder of Mr McKeeney, which happened around 12.40am on Sunday as he walked home from a night out.
Strathclyde Police revealed there is no clear motive for the attack, which left the victim fatally injured. Mr McKeeney was taken by ambulance to the Victoria Infirmary where he later died.
Mr McKeeney's 48-year-old partner had heard a disturbance and had seen the attack from the window of their ground floor flat, but did not realise he was the victim.
It was only when she went outside that she found it was her partner.
Chief Inspector Stephen McAllister said she was "completely traumatised" by the murder, adding: "The fact she found him makes it even more horrendous."
Detective Chief Inspector David Gailey, said: "His partner heard a disturbance outside and when she went to look to see what was happening, she saw two men jumping up and down on the street before making off towards Darnley Street.
"She then went outside only to find that it was William who had been attacked. As you will no doubt understand, she is completely devastated, as are William's family - most of whom are in Ireland."
Mr McKeeney, who was originally from Donegal and worked in Glasgow as a labourer, suffered injuries to his head and body in what police have described as "a brutal and sustained attack."
DCI Gailey added: “To speculate on a motive at this time is completely unhelpful, and indeed may hinder our investigation, however, we are keeping an open mind as to why it happened.
"I am convinced that someone in the community knows who did this and I would appeal to them to contact police and help us take this investigation forward.
"People should be repulsed by what has happened and I would ask them to think about the effect this has had on his partner and indeed, the local community. There are over 60 officers involved in this enquiry and we are determined to find who committed this awful crime."
Mr McKeeney had been out locally socialising in pubs in the Pollokshaws Road and Nithsdale Road areas and was making his way home when the attack took place.
The two men police want to talk to are of Asian appearance, one is six feet four inches tall and thin, and was wearing a light hooded top and light grey tracksuit bottoms. The second man was of average height and build and was wearing a navy tracksuit.
Anyone with information about the murder should contact the incident room at Cathcart Police Office on 0141 532 4943.
