The West Coast Rail Service is to get an additional 28,000 seats under a new franchise agreement.
The UK Government also announced that extra train services will be added during busy travel periods and the introduction of smart ticketing technology to allow more flexible travel for passengers.
Four rail operators are bidding for the new contract which will begin in December.
The service is currently provided by Virgin Trains.
