Attack: Police believe the man may have been scared off by a dog barking.

A teenage girl has been sexually assaulted while walking along a footpath beside the River Kelvin in Glasgow.

The 15-year-old victim was attacked by a man standing on the Kelvin Walkway about 20 to 30 metres from Kelvindale Road at 9.25am on Friday.

The man grabbed the girl, pushed her and tore at her clothes before running off towards Kelvindale Road.

Strathclyde Police said he may have been disturbed by a dog barking.

The man is described as in his late 20s, six feet tall with a pale appearance and had short dark hair.

He was wearing a blue hooded top, dark trousers and black and white Adidas trainers.

Detective Sergeant Alec Cameron said the victim had been left extremely distressed and asked for any witnesses to come forward.

He said: "This attack has left a young girl extremely upset and frightened. It's imperative we trace the man responsible and I would appeal to anyone who may have any information or who knows anything about the suspect to please get in touch with us as a matter of urgency.

"This area is frequently used by dog walkers, joggers and walkers and I'm sure there would have been people out and about at that time of the day.

"I would ask anyone who was there, in particular dog walkers, to get in touch with us as it's possible they have some vital information about the suspect which could assist our investigation and help us trace him."

Anyone with information should contact Maryhill police office on 0141 532 3700 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
