A man has appeared in court charged with an assault at the home of former council leader Steven Purcell.

Mr Purcell, who stood down from the helm of Glasgow City Council in 2010, was detained by police for questioning, before being released without charge.

Ross Henderson is alleged to have attacked someone to their severe injury and disfigurement at Mr Purcell’s property in Ingram Street, Glasgow.

It is believed that the alleged assault, which took place at 5.30am on Sunday, was not on Mr Purcell.

Henderson made no plea or declaration when he appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court and was committed for further examination.

The 36-year-old from Yoker, Glasgow was released on bail.

Mr Purcell, 39, was held for around ten hours while he helped police with their enquiries but was released after questioning on Sunday night.

The former rising star of the Scottish Labour party announced on March 2, 2010, that he was stepping down from his post as leader of the council to "concentrate on his health and well-being".

Soon, accusations of cocaine use came to light and the former council leader was quoted in an article in The Sun sometime later admitting that he had used the drug a "handful" of times.

He checked in to Castle Craig Rehabilitation clinic in Peebleshire once he had stood down and at one point was posted missing from the facility, before he returned after police had been called out.

Earlier this month, the Crown Office confirmed that Mr Purcell would not face any criminal charges in relation to a police investigation into him and fellow councillor Ruth Black.
