Police station 'held up by man armed with shotgun'

A man has been arrested after he walked into a police station allegedly armed with what appeared to be a shotgun.

Armed police officers were called to the scene at Cumbernauld police station in South Muirhead Road at around 10.30pm on Sunday.

Strathclyde Police said they entered into dialogue with the man who was later detained by police at about 00.10am.

During the indident the Strathclyde Police helicopter could be seen hovering over the centre of the North Lanarkshire town.

A statement from the police on Monday morning said: "Strathclyde Police can confirm that a 53-year-old man is in custody following an incident in Cumbernauld on Sunday night."

The 53-year-old man is expected to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Tuesday. Police said no-one was injured in the incident.
