A ceremony has taken place to remember the 19 men who lost their lives in the worst peacetime tragedy in the history of the British fire service.

14 fire fighters and five salvage corps personnel lost their lives in an explosion when they tackled a blaze at a whisky warehouse in Glasgow.

The fire at Arbuckle Smith and Company on Cheapside Street happened in 1960.

A ceremony to mark the 49th anniversary of the disaster took place on Saturday at Glasgow's Necropolis, near the city's cathedral.

Senior officers, veterans of the disaster and other retired fire fighters were among those who attended the event.

Preparations are already under way to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cheapside Street disaster next year, with a series of events including a special exhibition and a ceremony in Glasgow.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said on Saturday: "There was a larger turnout than usual with people anticipating the 50th anniversary next year."
