It's early days in the consultation on new plans for George Square, but already locals have been having their say online.
The six shortlisted designs went on display on Wednesday, with a winner due to be announced on 18 January.
Twitter users were quick to have their say this morning. We've posted most of the responses we've had to @STVGlasgow below, and will add more as they come in.
You can vote for your favourite on the STV Glasgow Facebook gallery.
We also went out with the camera earlier to get the first impressions of people passing through the square. Some of the people we met compared the designs to similar spaces in Toronto and Barcelona.
Robert Florence, the comedian behind hit show Burnistoun, pointed out a lack of greenery in the designs:
No grass anywhere. "@stvglasgow: Shortlisted designs for controversial George Square revamp revealed bit.ly/VEND8M"
— Robert Florence (@robertflorence) January 9, 2013
Local DJ Robin Galloway told us:
@stvglasgow Quite line 'An urban salon' Although surely and urban saloon would be more popular here in the west.
— Robin Galloway (@djrobingalloway) January 9, 2013
Kate Costigan wasn't impressed:
All horrendous RT "@stvglasgow: Shortlisted designs for controversial George Square revamp revealed bit.ly/VEND8M"
— Kate Costigan (@KateCostigan_x) January 9, 2013
Haha - the one design for George Sq that looks like a giant tartan carpet. Tartan? Really? You went there?
— Kate Costigan (@KateCostigan_x) January 9, 2013
Laura (@RedDee85) was keen on the options with less water and more open space:
Five or six does it for me. RT “@stvglasgow: Shortlisted designs for controversial George Square revamp revealed bit.ly/VEND8M”
— Laura (@RedDee85) January 9, 2013
Ross Macdonald and Kirstin Hutchinson are also in the 'less water' camp:
The #georgesquare designs appear to contain a lot of 'water' effects - that is NOT what #glasgow needs! #givemesunshine
— Ross Macdonald (@rosscoMacd) January 9, 2013
George Square is getting a makeover! Not sure paddling pool is weather appropriate for #Glasgow though. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…
— Kirstin Hutchinson (@kirstinhutch) January 9, 2013
Alison Campbell misses the old design:
@stvglasgow 15m for a big puddle, a bit of motorway, some checked slabs or permanent rain! And it used to be lovely! #georgesquare #glasgow
— Alison Campbell (@CrikeyAphrodite) January 9, 2013
Sandy Sneddon is among those backing design numbers five and six, albeit not very enthusiastically, which seems to be the consensus so far:
@douglasbarrie @stvamanda No 5 looks traditional, 6 has a modern look to it. Don't rate the others.
— Sandy Sneddon (@SandySneddon) January 9, 2013
SNP councillor David Turner has his say:
@stvamanda dont like any of them all are sterile and rip the history and heart out of the Square1 week for public consultation is a joke
— David Turner (@DavidTurnerW20) January 9, 2013
His party colleague Martin Docherty adds that the flowerbeds are listed…
@restoregeorgesq wonder what will happen to the stone around the statues - circles with bedding plants are also listed not just statues...
— Martin Docherty (@MartinJDocherty) January 9, 2013
…and urges local people to get involved in the consultation process:
9 days left to have your say about our most important public place get along to the @the_lighthouse to see the design entries #George Sq
— Martin Docherty (@MartinJDocherty) January 9, 2013
Graeme Hendry, a councillor for the Garscadden and Scotstounhill ward, sums up his views over two Tweets:
Quick look at George Square designs reveals 1 that wants you to walk on water. 1 with the big brother eye. 1 looks like a road.
— Graeme Hendry (@GraemeHendry) January 8, 2013
1 has what looks like a posh bus station/smoking shelter. 1 has no statutes returned, 1 has a walk to view statutes, all have water features
— Graeme Hendry (@GraemeHendry) January 8, 2013
Mhairi Hunter wants more benches in the design...
Interesting that Geo Square consultation supported both increase in greenery & seating space yet this seems lacking from designs.
— Mhairi Hunter (@MhairiHunter) January 9, 2013
...as does Craig Albert:
@stvglasgow Also where are all the benches and places to sit supposed to go? I don't see any in these designs #georgesquare
— Craig Albert (@craigalbert_) January 9, 2013
David Meikle, a Conservative councillor for Pollokshields, wants green spaces to return to the square:
My late entry into George Square design comp. Just replace the red tarmac & reintroduce the greenspace. Cost: not as much as £millions!
— David Meikle (@cllrdmeikle) January 9, 2013
Jenni Hendry said she would rather see the money spent elsewhere:
@stvglasgow £15million to revamp? There are homeless people who sleep there, how bout helping them instead? #joke #priorities #noidea
— jenni mack (hendry) (@weejenhen) January 9, 2013
Considering the weather, David Macdonald suggested Glasgow doesn't need more water:
@robertflorence @stvglasgow a water fountain or pool areas in George Square? It's like that on every corner in Glasgow most days anyway.
— David Macdonald (@David_Mac1) January 9, 2013
Another Tweeter seeking some greenery, Cathy McRorie also goes for design number six:
@robertflorence @stvglasgow Entry 6 has some greenery & flower beds. The rest I don't much care for.
— Kitty (@CathyMcRorie) January 9, 2013
@stvglasgow Glasgow Tartan one is interesting
— Johanna Baxter (@JohannaBaxter) January 9, 2013
Unimpressed, James Chalmers can only find one design he would like to see:
@stvamanda @stvglasgow none of them except maybe the third last one seem like they would be fit for purpose & look terrible.
— James Chalmers (@skippychalmers) January 9, 2013
The tartan paving design doesn't sit well with local photographer Michael McGurk:
@stvglasgow There's no grass!!! People don't want water coming out of the ground or tartan paving. They just want somewhere nice to sit.
— michael mcgurk (@mickmcgurk) January 9, 2013
@stvglasgow It's bad enough being battered with rain coming out the sky. Now we want it coming out of the ground? Aye...very good!
— michael mcgurk (@mickmcgurk) January 9, 2013
@stvglasgow They are rubbish.
— WHiT.....? (@coats_donna) January 9, 2013
There's a more enthusiastic response to the tartan design from Alison Munro Lees:
@stvglasgow They're all good but I really like the one with the ice rink on it and the tartan one. Looking forward to seeing the end result.
— Alison Munro Lees (@AlisonMunroLees) January 9, 2013
The brief burst of enthusiasm was short-lived, however, as @DementedBonxie despairs:
@michaelmacleod1 What a rum bunch! Put the statues back, with some garden, loads of space for playing, demonstrating, fountain, NO ta...
— DementedBonxie (@DementedBonxie) January 9, 2013
@Shell_568 and Linda McGarrigle are among those against any revamp, calling for the money to be spent elsewhere:
@stvglasgow absolute waste of money that would be better spent elsewhere. Have @glasgowcc got a budget to try & justify or something?
— Shell Shocked (@Shell_568) January 9, 2013
@stvglasgow So Stony looking, why do all the designs lack Grass greenery is lovely! eek! should be left as it is! #MoreyMoneyThanSense
— Linda Mc Garrigle (@cheeksdevil) January 9, 2013
@stvglasgow Hope it includes a monument commemorating the workers part in the Battle of George Square (aka Bloody Friday) 1919.
— Robert Ronsson (@RobRonsson) January 9, 2013
@stvglasgow Yeah, that's what Glasgow needs, LESS parking spaces. Ridiculous
— Mr D'Arcy (@MrD4rcy) January 9, 2013
Andy Coyle of the STV Sport team has come up with his own design, complete with a bakery, Laserquest and a protest area:
@stvglasgow Here's the sport desk's effort. We are proposing a rebrand to "Square Go". twitter.com/STVGrant/statu…
— Grant Russell (@STVGrant) January 9, 2013
Local librarian Anabel Marsh would rather see the money spent along the Clyde:
@stvglasgow George Square fine if they replaced red Tarmac. If they want to spend money, the riverside area needs it more - it's a disgrace.
— Anabel Marsh (@AnabelMarsh) January 9, 2013
City-based lawyer Aamer Anwar is not a fan either:
@gerrybraiden @stvglasgow there's nowhere to hang glasgow's mingin Xmas decorations from in that design
— Aamer Anwar (@AamerAnwar) January 9, 2013
The council says it will consider all responses to this online survey before announcing a winning design on 18 January.
