Toxic algae alert at visitor attraction

Toxic algae alert

Harmful organism forces banning of many water sports

Toxic algae has again been found in the water at the area’s biggest watersports attraction.

The blue-green algae was found in Strathclyde Loch and is the same organism which appeared last year leading the postponement of a charity swim.

It was found in the loch on Thursday and all sports which involve going under water have been banned as a result.

A spokeswoman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “Test samples are being sent to SEPA every two weeks to monitor the condition of the water, and full sports services at the loch will be restored to normal as soon as we have been notified that it is safe to do so. “Sailing and boating activities are still available. “Warning signs have been posted around the loch, and pet owners are advised to keep their pets out of the water.”
