Members of Rutherglen Amateur Swimming Club compete in annual club championships
Rutherglen ASC have help their club championships and the swimmers did their club proud.
More than 90 swimmers, of all ages, took part in the main championships events. There was also a top form trophy competition with a further four open age group 200m events.
After holding the championships at Castlemilk pool last year, the club decided to bring them home to Lifestyles Pool at Eastfield after negotiating some poolside spectator space with the pool management team.
Coaches at the event revealed that the standard of swimming at this year’s championships was exceptionally high.
Head coach Lindsay Young was delighted to see most events won in times faster than last year.
She said: "Although there were some cracking swims, to us coaches there were few surprises. We see how swimmers are training, their attendances attitude and behaviour. On a day like this where swimmers have multiple events it gets harder and harder to swim well as the day progresses and the swimmers tire more easily. But, those who train hard, and attend regularly, manage personal best times or close on nearly every swim."
For many swimmers in the younger age groups these events were their first taste of swimming in a competition, and they took great encouragement from the loudly cheering spectators and older swimmers alike to put in some great performances.
For the older swimmers the club the championships are an opportunity to see how they have progressed since last year and a great chance to compete against each other in their home pool.
The overall championship age group cup winners were: Louise Bradley and Adam Bullard in the age eight and unders, Michaela Warner and Johann Fawcett in the nine year olds, Rosie Mathieson and Jonathan Christie in the 10 year olds, Hazel Leslie and Neil Anderson in the 11 year olds, Lina Guarin and Calum Gowran in the 12 year olds, Erin Holmes and Ross Leslie in the 13 year olds and Emma Wotherspoon and Ghais Guarin in the 14 and overs.
Tuesday nights Top Form races were open age group 200m events with points handicapping based on age. Winners were Hazel (11) and Ross Leslie (13) in the 200m butterfly, Amie Harvey (11) and Ghais Guarin (14) in the 200m backstroke and Abigail Mein (10) and Jonathan Christie (10) in the 200m breaststroke.
This year’s prestigious Coach’s Cup winners which is based on combining results from the championships and top form trophy were Michaela Warner and Ethan Horn in the juniors, and Erin Holmes and Ross Leslie in the seniors.
A spokesman from Rutherglen ASC said: "With so many great swimmers coming through the ranks, the club hopes to go from strength to strength this year, with athletes taking part in a large number of club competitions - the Clyde Coast Mini League, the West District Championships, Scottish Schools Championships and the Scottish National Age Group Championships.
"The club would like to extend its sincerest thanks to all the volunteers and pool staff who made both events such a success."
