Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I listen if I can't get DAB?
There are some areas in Scotland that are currently not covered by DAB, particularly in the Borders and the Highlands and Islands. You can hear us anywhere in Scotland on the STV Player or on Smart Speaker. If you're travelling, you may be able to connect your phone to your car audio system with CarPlay.
Can I tune in on my TV?
We are not available within the channel listings on TV. We will soon be available on the STV Player app on your connected tv but this is not available for launch.
How do I listen in my car?
To hear STV Radio in your car, you'll need a DAB radio.
In Central Scotland, the North East of Scotland and Ayrshire you can hear us on your DAB radio. If you are in Inverness, Moray, the Highlands or Tayside you will need the newer DAB+ radio receiver to hear us. 95% of new cars these days are fitted with DAB+ sets.
If your set is an older DAB set, you may see our name but not be able to hear us. In this instance please listen on STV Player and you can connect via CarPlay in car.
If your car only has one of the old AM/FM ones, you won't be able to use it to hear us directly. Knowing frequency numbers and twiddling up the dial won't find us! Sorry.
You can buy devices which 'convert' your FM radio to a DAB set. This article in Which magazine may help.
How do I catch-up/Listen again to programmes?
Go to the STV Radio section on our STV Player; to see which shows are available for catch-up.
They're available for 28 days after broadcast.
Sadly not all our programmes are available on catch-up.
What's your FM/AM frequency?
We are not on FM or AM - so we don't have one.
We are on DAB, STV Player and Smart Speaker - and you don't need to know any frequency for those platforms - just look for us by name – STV Radio – or ask Alexa to “Play STV Radio”
Why can't I find STV Radio at all on my DAB?
We are available across Central Scotland, the North East of Scotland and Ayrshire on DAB. In Inverness, Moray, the Highlands and Tayside we are available on DAB+. DAB+ is a more advanced DAB transmission technology. All DAB sets currently on sale are DAB+ enabled but some older sets will unfortunately be unable to receive DAB+ stations. In Moray, Inverness and Tayside if you cannot find us on your DAB set, you may have an older DAB receiver. In order to tune into STV Radio please find us on STV Player, on Smart Speaker or look at upgrading your receiver to a new DAB+ enabled radio set.
Why can I see STV Radio listed on DAB but not hear anything?
If you are in Inverness, Moray, the Highlands or Tayside you have one of the older DAB radios. Sadly they don't receive our DAB+ signal. So please find us on STV Player, on Smart Speaker or look at upgrading your receiver to a new DAB+ enabled set. All new DAB sets are DAB+ enabled.
Why does the DAB signal dip in and out on my car radio?
Our signal reaches most major roads, but there are patches where it doesn't. Sadly, in Scotland not all of the country is covered by DAB. If you struggle to hear us, maybe try linking your phone to your car audio system and CarPlay.
Why isn’t STV Radio on FM?
Sadly, it's not possible. There's no more room on FM for any new stations.
DAB however is the more modern digital broadcast technology enabling many more radio stations to be available to consumers. We are also available on the STV Player and on smart speaker.
How do I listen if I can't get DAB?
You can hear our station anywhere in the Scotland on STV Player and Smart Speaker
Still can't get us?
There are various adapters you can buy which convert your old radio to a DAB+ set.
If you cannot hear us on the actual radio in your car, you may be able to access us via the STV Player app and CarPlay.
